Of all the life forms on earth, the most fortunate is the human life form, for this reason: as human beings we have the option to change the course of our lives and hence our destinies. A guy comes across some excellent teaching and a collection of good ideas thereby getting a ‘light bulb moment’ and makes a conscious decision to turn his life round in an instant. A lady picks a good book and she makes an application of the principles from the book enabling her to raise her children in an excellent way. A man has been bankrupt for the past twenty years but after attending a finance and investment seminar decides to relook at his spending habits resulting in a reshaping of his financial circumstances. This is all made possible because of the human life form’s capacity to make choices that can change the course and direction of their lives. The chemical, plant and animal life forms are deprived of this benefit since they do not consciously make choices. Surprisingly, a good number of people lead lives that are far from satisfactory but remain reluctant to take advantage of the ability to improve on themselves.

You could have been at the bottom of the positional title totem pole for quite a good number of years now. I can almost guarantee you that It has not been comfortable for you down there my friend. It is always crowded at the bottom and lonely at the top. All the natural credentials for greatness are in your possession but you only lack the resolve to go to the top. It might only be an extra skill that you require to be at the top, which is not impossible since all of those at the top followed the same path as they climbed up the ladder. I call it the same path since the disciplines and principles that lead up there are the same. One successful business leader once said that the most important skill of the 21st century is the skill of learning new skills. How dare you look at the limiting factors of your life and do nothing about it? It is not beyond your ability to change. The better life that you dream of is just a decision away- a decision to change.

A surprising number of us get challenged and see the truth but develop cold feet when action becomes imperative. Realization of the truth unaccompanied by corresponding action will only lead to remorse which is said to be the poison of life. Once you realize the truth jump into action especially during these first months of the year. Enroll at college, attend classes, read books and develop the required discipline to study. Hang around with the people whose mindsets you wish to be compatible with. Stop associating with the old folk that is not going anywhere and shape your destiny for the better.

Sit down to count the obstacles and start attacking them one by one. Draw a program of action and make the necessary corrections. Decide on how you intend to tackle the challenges as you pursue your path to the top.

Are you yearning for greatness? Sure the path to greatness is already laid out before you and everybody else willing to take the first step. Greatness, like success and the appropriation of wealth, has principles underlying it. Observation and application of those principles will certainly guarantee greatness.

Are you yearning for greatness? Sure the path to greatness is already laid out before you and everybody else willing to take the first step. Greatness, like success and the appropriation of wealth, has principles underlying it. Observation and application of those principles will certainly guarantee greatness.

Greatness is a by-product of the provision of service.

This principle has been reiterated since time immemorial. Christ the master teacher taught it, “And whoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant.” Calvin Coolidge further unraveled it. “No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.” On 20 January 1961, John F. Kennedy in his inaugural address breezed through this principle, “…ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” If you babble about how great you are in your neighborhood no one will believe you but if you serve many, no one can doubt your greatness. Many men and women who laid down their lives in fighting for their fellow countrymen have their names remaining in history books and no one will delete them. The names of those who received service have since sunk into oblivion.

How does this principle work? You may ask. As all other people are going about their usual businesses, great musicians for example, spend hours singing and dancing in front of no audience, perfecting and polishing their talents so that when the time comes to serve many they will be able to perform at their best. Apart from perfecting their voices, they go through rigorous practice sessions and physical exercise to remain fit. The same is true for athletes and other various disciplines. While others are enjoying, they are agreeing to be servants of their fans but when it’s time for awards they become the great among us.

In business we strive to have as many customers as we can serve, although others go to the extent of luring more than they can handle, of course to their own detriment. When your customers are in need of your services you work tirelessly until you have satisfied yourself that they have received the service which they rightfully deserve. This also earns you customer loyalty. A doctor on call can be called during the early hours of the morning when the majority is snoring and goes to save life. The greater the number of lives he/she saves, the greater they become. The more people you serve the greater you become and consequently the fatter your wallet gets in the process. It is a fact that the more clients a business has, the more money it will make, ceteris paribus. In other words, more customers you have, the more masters there are for you to serve, and the higher your income level becomes.

“Customer is king.” Agree to be a servant to as many as you can and you will discover your seeds of greatness hidden therein.
